How do I charge an EV or PHEV?
EVs and PHEVs can be charged at home with a supplied cable or on the road at a charging point.
A few examples are
- Mode 2 cable at home.
- Mode 3 cable at home.
- Mode 3 cable on the road.
- Mode 4 cable on the road.
How long does it take to charge an EV or PHEV?
Depending on which charging mode you use, you can fully charge your EV overnight or in as little as 30 minutes.
Some of the factors that affect charging speeds are:
- Charging mode
- Total battery capacity
- Current amount of charge
- Battery temperature
What is the range of EVs and PHEVs?
Range differs from vehicle to vehicle and outside factors can affect it. EVs can usually drive hundreds of kilometers on a single charge while PHEVs go less than a hundred kilometers before the engine take over.
Some of the factors that affect range are:
- Driving style
- Battery temperature
- Road type
- Weather (Ambient temperature and wind)
- Load (Passengers and cargo)
- Use of accessories (A/C, heater, radio, etc.)
How much does it cost to charge an EV or PHEV?
Instead of paying a certain amount per litre, you pay per kW and sometimes for the time spent plugged in. Electric power is generally much cheaper than fossil fuels.
Charging cost can vary by:
- Suppliers
- Type of charging point
- Time of day
- Payment method
How do I pay for charging?
Each supplier has their preferred payment method.
Direct payments to the supplier are usually cheaper and are made though an app or at the charging station with an RFID Keyfob/Card or with a credit/debit card.
Payments to some suppliers can also be made through a Roaming Network, such as Plugsurfing, where you pay a service fee to the network for handling the transaction.
What happens if I run out of power?
If you are worried that you might not reach a charging point in time, you can maximise range by turning on Eco Mode (If available), by turning off various accessories and by maintaining a slow but constant speed.
If your EVs battery is depleted you must notify AVIS Iceland. The vehicle must then be transported to the nearest charging point with a specialised vehicle. Renters are responsible for all fees and charges from transporting the vehicle.
